Precious slumber

After a tiring day
When twilight announces it's arrival
You hug me, you kiss me
Recite me lovely lullaby
And finally cosset me in your warm and cozy arms
Sense of serene calm envelops me
And I drift off to sleep
Floating in the waves of mesmerizing dreams

Some unpleasant trill
Jolts me suddenly
And you, my precious slumber, leave me in lurch
Annoyance sweeps over me
I look around, to see deep darkness stretched all over
Calling you desperately
But, you refuse to claim me for long
Breaking the golden chain of peace

  4. What a contrast you have written from the peacefulness in the first stanza to being jolted awake not to return to sleep in the second stanza. I do get this as well, as sometimes this also happens to me. I suddenly wake up in the night, and for whatever reason cannot return to sleep until it is about time for my alarm to ring. Sigh! Very well expressed.

  5. Nothing more peaceful than that sleepy, content feeling when one dozes off and what a disturbing feeling to be jolted awake and lose that serenity. Very nice poem!

  7. I know this feeling lately I will starting out sleeping deeply, happily and then at about 4 o'clock which is earlier than I am inclined to leave my bed I wake up and can't get back sleep. Its frustrating guess I am adjusting to the increased light. This was beautiful =)

  8. Yes, I can feel the jolt of the rude awakening......and the peace of the surrender to sleep......great contrast.

  10. An interesting way to look at sleep, as a lover. The floating feeling you describe is really how the drug of sleep does feel.

  14. I love to be hugged by slumber, the beautiful comfortable warmth of it...to be jolted out of it - not good.

    Love your words.
