After a tiring day
When twilight announces it's arrival
You hug me, you kiss me
Recite me lovely lullaby
And finally cosset me in your warm and cozy arms
Sense of serene calm envelops me
And I drift off to sleep
Floating in the waves of mesmerizing dreams
Some unpleasant trill
Jolts me suddenly
And you, my precious slumber, leave me in lurch
Annoyance sweeps over me
I look around, to see deep darkness stretched all over
Calling you desperately
Calling you desperately
But, you refuse to claim me for long
Breaking the golden chain of peace

Sleep is indeed peaceful and we really sometimes wish to stay in its lap!!
ReplyDeleteYes and it's really frustrating when something breaks this peace.
DeleteAs a person who struggles with insomnia I get this...slumber is so precious, you really know it when you aren't getting enough of it!
ReplyDeleteIt's really sad that you struggle with insomnia. Slumber is really precious :)
DeleteSleeping is heavenly bliss! Sometimes, I wish I could sleep more hours than I usually do!
ReplyDeleteYes it is!! In today's hectic life, this is everyone's wish I guess:)
DeleteBeautiful poem Tarang!
ReplyDeleteThank you Valli!:)
DeleteWhat a contrast you have written from the peacefulness in the first stanza to being jolted awake not to return to sleep in the second stanza. I do get this as well, as sometimes this also happens to me. I suddenly wake up in the night, and for whatever reason cannot return to sleep until it is about time for my alarm to ring. Sigh! Very well expressed.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Mary! It happens quite often:)
DeleteNothing more peaceful than that sleepy, content feeling when one dozes off and what a disturbing feeling to be jolted awake and lose that serenity. Very nice poem!
ReplyDeleteYou're right! Glad you liked this poem. Thanks Lisa!:)
DeleteI really liked this poem, it really pulled me in.
ReplyDeleteThank you Kimolisa!:)
DeleteI know this feeling lately I will starting out sleeping deeply, happily and then at about 4 o'clock which is earlier than I am inclined to leave my bed I wake up and can't get back sleep. Its frustrating guess I am adjusting to the increased light. This was beautiful =)
ReplyDelete:) Thanks!
DeleteYes, I can feel the jolt of the rude awakening......and the peace of the surrender to sleep......great contrast.
ReplyDeleteThanks!:)
DeleteIt's irritating when we are jolted from sleep, and then find it difficult to sleep again ... happens so often !!!
ReplyDeleteYes it happens quite often!!
DeleteAn interesting way to look at sleep, as a lover. The floating feeling you describe is really how the drug of sleep does feel.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!:)
Deleteah! i have been trying hard to catch a blissful sleep for long and wonder how long i will have to wait and try!
ReplyDeleteI wish you get the warm embrace of slumber very soon...:)
DeleteExtremely Beautiful Poem Tarang. Your lines just drifted off me to think, when was the last blissful sleep of mine!
ReplyDelete:) Thank you so much!:)
DeleteBlissful sleep when broken can leave you asking strange questions and seeking difficult answers... Nice verse Tarang:)
ReplyDeleteYou're right about questions and answers!! Thank you Reshma!:)
DeleteI love to be hugged by slumber, the beautiful comfortable warmth of it...to be jolted out of it - not good.
