Too Good to be True

Anita woke up with a start. Something disturbed her sleep. Something strange, she didn't know what. Her bedroom was almost dark. Her heart skipped a couple of beats when she realized that Divya, her 2 year old daughter, was not on the bed. Then she relaxed immediately, as she watched the shadow of Avinash moving on the terrace, her baby sleeping peacefully on his shoulder. She closed her eyes again. Her face was beaming with contentment in the faint street light filtering through the thin, swaying curtain. The night was pleasantly cool.

Avinash, her husband, was too good to be true. He often slept on the couch in the bedroom so that they get ample space on the bed. Whenever Divya woke up in the middle of the night, he would take her to the living room or terrace quietly so that she doesn't get disturbed after a hectic, tiresome day. Avinash respected her. He loved her so passionately. And he loved Divya like his own daughter.

Anita flinched as her thoughts rushed to Vikas, her first husband and father of her daughter.

It wasn't a long term companionship, but it was special.

Anita fell pregnant within the first year of their marriage. They were happy. Vikas was so excited about the baby but fate didn't like their happiness and excitement. Anita's life shattered when Vikas died in a terrible accident even before Divya was born. Poor Vikas, he couldn't even see his daughter.

Her life seemed bleak. Living alone, raising a baby alone… and then Avinash entered her life like a breath of fresh air. Like a protective embrace. They got married 3 months ago.

Suddenly feeling thristy, Anita sleepily went to the kitchen. She could hear the murmur of TV. They forgot to switch off the TV? Or is it her neighbor? She thought.

While returning to her bedroom, she peeked into the small living room, clearly visible from the door of her bedroom.

Fear gripped her, almost paralyzed her the moment her eyes landed on the sofa. She wanted to scream but it felt like a stone was wedged in her throat.

Avinash was sitting on the sofa, watching TV. Avinash…she turned to look at the dark terrace. Avinash was still sauntering on the terrace, Divya still sleeping in his lap...
