Do You Work on the Ideas Before Painting?

(Acrylic on Canvas, 12" by 16". For Sale)

I never thought I would say this but, for me, Instagram is a happy place, mainly because of the artists and art hashtags I follow. I enjoy seeing the beautiful artworks and interacting with wonderful artists.

Once I found a beautiful artwork and the caption left me wondering: 'The night sky looked so beautiful that I wanted to paint but since I was busy with my commissioned projects, I couldn't paint. So I looked at the sky and jot down the ideas so that I don't miss the details whenever I sit down to paint.'

I don't remember the exact words but this is what she said and I was surprised. She sounded like a writer. We do jot down the ideas so that we don't forget it. We do not trust our memory, you know.

So, even artists write down the ideas? And does it work?

It's been a few months, I think, and now I have an 'Ideas for Paintings' section on my mobile notes. Some images flash in my mind and I make a note.

And it means, now I have started to paint from my imagination. Like this one. 👇

And strangely, I struggle to follow any reference photo. I just start to do my own thing. Not sure whether it's a good or not-so-good thing. Like this 👇 one.

This sketch is inspired by Pratik Banerjee's photo that he shared on Twitter. The photo was gorgeous but I couldn't really follow and did this quick illustration.

Do you work on painting ideas before actually painting it?

  1. You have a great imagination, your paintings are so beautiful - I love the second one, the colours and the concept! I always have an idea in mind when I paint and draw. I tried to make concepts and ideas come together. I've found that when I just go for it, I end up really disappointed with what I paint! Unless I'm striving for abstract!

    1. Thank you so much, Rain, for your kind words! When I painted the second one, I had no idea what I was going to paint. I was just sure about the colours. :)

  2. I love your colorful paintings. Thank you for your comment on my blog. The page you asked from,I col mixed-media which means that I painted with akrylics the face and composed digitally the background. I like to work this way because I've painted only short time.
I wish you a happy new week ahead ♥️

  4. These are all beautiful. You have such a wonderful touch with the paint brush and the colors are amazing. The window piece with the wisp of the curtains is brilliant.

  6. A very thought provoking post. I hate it when obligations get in the way of creativity. I do write down ideas. However, I when I sit down to draw/paint it tends to drift and I end up with something completely different. Beautiful paintings! I specially love the last curtained window painting.

    1. Yes, I know what you mean. I find it difficult to follow the reference photo and start doing my own thing. Thank you so much, Soma! :)

  7. Beautiful paintings, I like your own thing. I sometimes jot things down but not with enough detail.
